What are Sub IDs?

September 12th, 2013

“What are sub IDs?” is easily one of the most common questionswe’re asked on live chat. Optional and often overlooked by new publishers, sub IDs are an important tool to utilize when scaling your campaigns and are typically used in one of two situations.

1. Segmenting Your Traffic

If you’re running an offer across multiple traffic sources or have placed a banner in a few places throughout your website, understanding where your clicks and conversions are coming from is key to running a successful campaign. You can add a unique sub ID to your affiliate link and then view the segmented information under Reports.

For example, the affiliate links:
http://trkur5.com/132826/25049?s1=banner1
and
http://trkur5.com/132826/25049?s1=banner2

Would track like this in your reports:

To view your sub ID reports, just click on the offer name.

2. Tracking Purposes

Many traffic sources provide placeholder variables that you can append to your affiliate link that will then allow you to pull information onto your PeerFly reports. For example: 7Search provides variables for keyword, affiliate ID and RID and you can add them to your affiliate link in the first three sub IDs.

Adding these sub ID to your affiliate link:
?s1=###KEYWORD###&s2=###AFFID###&s3=###RID###

Would yield this information in your reports:

(Luke has a blog post about understanding and using those results here.)

Placeholder variables are provided by your traffic source and can usually be found with a quick search. As always, if there’s anything you’re unsure of – hit up your AM!
